3 Days Akagera Wildlife Safari

3 Days Akagera Wildlife Safari

The 3 Days Akagera Wildlife Safari takes you from Kigali into the open landscapes of Akagera National Park, where savannah, wetlands and lakes create a very different side of Rwanda. Instead of spending your time moving from one landmark to another, this safari gives you time to slow down, watch the landscape change and look for wildlife along the way.

Akagera is a great choice for travellers who want a proper wildlife experience without giving up the chance to see another side of Rwanda. Game drives take you across the park in search of animals, while time on the water adds a quieter way to experience the park’s lakes and surrounding wetlands.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali to Akagera National Park

Leave Kigali and travel east towards Akagera National Park. The journey takes you away from the city and into the countryside, with changing scenery along the way as you approach the park. After reaching Akagera, begin exploring the park and its surrounding landscape. Depending on the timing of your arrival, you can take part in an introductory game drive and begin looking for wildlife as you settle into the rhythm of the safari. The first day is also a chance to appreciate the setting itself. Akagera is not only about the animals you hope to see. Its open plains, woodland, wetlands and distant hills create a landscape that changes constantly as you move through the park.

Set out early for a game drive through Akagera, when the park is beginning to come alive. Move through different parts of the reserve while looking for wildlife along the tracks and around the open plains. Your guide will help you read the landscape and identify animals as you go.

Later, experience Akagera from the water with a boat safari on Lake Ihema. The change from vehicle to boat gives you a completely different view of the park. Watch the shoreline, look out for birds and keep an eye on animals around the water as you move across the lake.

The combination of game drive and boat safari is what gives this trip its character. You experience Akagera from the road and from the water rather than seeing the park from only one perspective.

Start the morning with another opportunity to explore Akagera before leaving the park. Use the time for a final game drive and one more chance to look for wildlife in the changing morning light.

After your final experience in the park, begin the return journey to Kigali. Your 3 Days Akagera Wildlife Safari ends in Kigali, giving you the option to continue with your Rwanda itinerary or onward travel.
